About

Having served as an attorney for 30 years, Al has extensive experience in business disputes, including contractual claims, business torts, employment litigation, wrongful termination, leasing disputes, and other commercial matters. He also represents both plaintiffs and defendants in medical malpractice actions, product liability cases, nursing home litigation, wrongful death, discrimination, sexual abuse, and a wide variety of other cases involving serious injuries.

Al has served as counsel in several ground breaking cases. He recently completed successful representation of a university in a hard fought, nearly decade long suit brought by the Kentucky Attorney General under the Consumer Protection Act. A case where the AG sought millions of dollars resulted not only in a complete dismissal of the Complaint against Al’s client, but also in a ground-breaking decision with national ramifications defining the proper calculation of potential violations of a Consumer Protection Act statute in the context of on-line marketing. Al has obtained one of the largest personal injury verdicts in Central Kentucky and represented the prevailing party in an important decision where Kentucky’s Supreme Court defined permissible contact by opposing counsel of a corporate litigant’s employees.  Al also successfully represented a veteran in an precedent-setting Sixth Circuit case interpreting the applicability of the Veteran Judicial Review Act to medical malpractice actions. Al’s litigation practice has extended from Ashland to Paducah in both state and federal courts, as well as in mediations, arbitrations and administrative proceedings.

Al also counsels businesses on employment issues, transactions and daily operations. His clients include many prominent Central Kentucky businesses and local operations of national organizations.

Al has received the prestigious rating of “AV” from Martindale-Hubbell, awarded only to Kentucky’s top lawyers. The “AV” rating, based on peer evaluations, is the top rating for both legal abilities and professional ethics.

Upon graduation from Transylvania University (B.A., cum laude, 1980), Al served as a lobbyist for the Kentucky Retail Federation. In 1985, he graduated in the top 5% of his class from the University of Kentucky College of Law. He was elected to the Order of the Coif and the Kentucky Law Journal. Al began his legal career with a large regional firm. He established his own practice in 1992. Al has served and provided leadership on several professional and civic boards. He was the race chair for the Lexington affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for both 2006 and 2007. Al’s current civic volunteer services include serving as Corporate Sponsor Committee Chairperson for Central Kentucky’s Children’s Charities Foundation.
